Thanksgiving Sunday: October 7

Give Thanks…

Next Sunday, October 7 is Thanksgiving Sunday. As a way of giving thanks for the blessings we have received at God’s hands we are asked to bring non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest.

The Altar Guild would appreciate offerings of any garden produce you may want to donate to decorate the altar (and we’ll pass on the garden produce to Winnipeg Harvest, as well). You can drop off your extra tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, squash, beans, pumpkins, and zucchini (everyone always has too much zucchini!) between Monday, October 1 and Friday, October 5.

The office will be open between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Dean Paul will be away, and, because October 7 is the first Sunday of the month, Brian and Mavis will be at St. Peter’s Dynevor, so the Dean has invited the Rev. Canon Fletcher Stewart to preside and preach at the Thanksgiving Service.

Trinity Institute Conference 2012

Radical Christian Life:
Equipping Ourselves for Social Change

Friday evening December 7
to Sunday afternoon, December 9

Trinity Institute’s 42nd National Theological ConferenceRadical Christian Life: Equipping Ourselves for Social Change, will be held December 7-9, 2012 via webcast conference at St. John’sAnglican Cathedral.

Joan Chittister, OSB will offer tools for making the vital connection between contemplation and social action. She will be supported by workshop leaders including theologians, spiritual directors, and activists. Fr. Richard Rohr, OFM, author, teacher, and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation, will preach at the conference Eucharist.

Our task is now to be radical Christian communities in the here and now, not fossils of a bygone reality, not leftovers from an earlier golden age. Now we need new wisdom and a new kind of struggle to determine what we must be and do in the midst of these changing times.

Through plenary addresses, creative work sessions, and worship, this three-day conference we will explore questions such as:

  • How can our Christian traditions of social justice and contemplation energize our communities as forces for positive change in the world around us?
  • What practices help us to discern where we are called to engage?
  • Where may we find sources of creativity and resilience within our tradition?
  • How can we work in partnership with those of other faiths and no faith as we follow God’s call?

Parish Directory Permission Request

We need your permission…

The latest version of the Parish Directory is ready to print, but before we get to that step we need your permission to include more than just your name in the directory. On the table in the narthex, you’ll find a sheet that we ask you to fill in. Please print your name, then circle yes or no under ‘address’, ‘phone(s)’, ‘e mail’, cell’, and ‘fax’. You can decide what information you want to have printed in the directory. If you do not fill in the information we will take it that you do not object to having the directory printed with your name, address and contact information as it applies.  The Parish Directory is used only for contact between parish members , and it is not distributed outside the Cathedral. Please note that if Person A chooses not to have his or her phone numbers or e mail address printed in the directory and Person Bwants to contact Person A, Person B will have to cal the Cathedral office, and the office will contact Person A to ask him/her to call Person B. If all this is as clear as mud, please speak to the wardens or the Dean for a more concise explanation.

Back to Church Sunday: September 30, 2012

Sunday, September 30th is ‘Back to Church Sunday’. That’s the Sunday on which we invite friends and family to join us in worship. There are invitation cards on the table in the narthex. We encourage you to pray about who it is that you are to invite, and if you need more than one invitation card, feel free! Following worship on September 30 we will gather in the John West Hall for the first Soup Sunday of the year.

Ministry in Action: Catherdral Grounds

Ted’s been busy – again!

Sundial Restoration

Ted Stebbing, who spent his summer tending the garden, also found time to install a fountain (the gift of a parishioner) and is now working on restoring and setting up the sundial which stood for years in the cemetery. The sundial will stand at the north end of the garden between the tower and the office door. Our thanks to Ted for the time and effort he puts into beautifying the Cathedral.
