Simnel cakes

Sunday evening, April 3rd, at 7:30 p.m., the Cathedral will be welcoming the Diocesan community for the annual “Mothering Sunday Service”. This particular Sunday comes out of English Church history, where the dioceses were much smaller in area. The Cathedral, the centre of diocesan life and where the bishop’s teaching chair resided, became a focus for the scattered congregations and was known as the Mother Church. Also associated with the fourth Sunday in Lent, as the tradition evolved, was the use of specific lectionary readings such as a passage from the fourth chapter of Galatians which included verse 26 “Jerusalem…which is our mother”.

This special eucharist will also include the reaffirmation of baptismal promises and ordination vows, as well as the blessing of oils by the Bishop for distribution to Diocesan parishes.

Traditionally, simnel cake is served on this special occasion. Please assist us in hosting this evening by baking a simnel cake. Recipes and a sign up list can also be found in the Narthex.

Stewardship

When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water, he opened the door for a life-changing relationship with him. Stewardship likewise can be life-changing. When we open our hearts to Christ’s call in our lives – when we use our gifts in the service of others – we like the Samaritan woman will draw many others to Christ through our witness. Stewardship Office, The Archdiocese of Winnipeg, www.archwinnipeg.ca
